The Vidyavihar has treated education as an integrated process. Ever since its inception as a small hostel in 1912 and as a school in 1926, it has been trying to evolve a curriculum in which the academic, the emotional, the practical and the artistic find an organic blending. Along with crafts including wood work and metal engraving, music, drawing and painting found a place of importance in the educational program of the school. This enabled a number of pupils, to opt for a course in drawing and painting. At that time, the Vidyavihar had no fine arts college, but it had in Shri Rasiklal Parikh a talented art teacher who fulfilled the need of an arts school in his normal high school class room, and accepted a number of high school pupils as full time art students. This informal and adhoc arrangement, resulted, interestingly ,in giving Gujarat some of her outstanding artists.

1. Diploma in Drawing And Painting
2. Diploma in Applied ( Commercial) Arts
3. Diploma in Sculpture

These are post S.S.C courses of five year duration at the end of which the successful candidates are awarded the Gujarat State Government Diploma in Fine Arts.
4. The Arts Teachers' Diploma (A.T.D.) Course:
This is a drawing teachers' course of two year duration. Eligibility for admission to A.T.D. course is H.S.C. with drawing as a subject at the S.S.C. level.

The Department is located in a building specially designed by Shri Surendranath Kar to meet the needs of a modern arts school with studios , class-rooms laboratories, library, exhibition halls and assembly hall.
These courses, while having their distinctive characters are also organically fused into a pattern which makes it possible for every student to have a wider perspective of art in relation to community life and aesthetic perceptions.
